Goa has many forts. While the sea forts – at Aguada, Chapora and Cabo de Rama – are well known, the land forts – Alorna, Corjuem, Santo Estevam and Rachol – are away from the tourist circuit.

We start at Porvorim and pedal through village roads to Aldona, with its lovely traditional Goan houses. Here we cross a cable-stayed bridge and then make our way to the lovely riverine island of Corjuem.
The Corjuem Fort has its ramparts intact, but none of the structures inside are standing. It has an interesting history, including a story of a woman who served in the Portuguese garrison there disguised as a man. We have breakfast (on us) at a traditional bakery or eatery, then cross the arch suspension Corjuem bridge before we pedal back to Porvorim via a lovely riverside road.
