Kayaking

The secret beach with which you can have a solitary soiree on weekends
A VIRGIN BEACH: This is the secret beach with which you can have a solitary soiree on weekends

Kayaking has a charm that is all its own. It’s you, alone, in a boat powered just by you. You could paddle or you could ponder. All of nature’s majesty lies before you…

We teach kayaking basics. We take you out to backwater mangrove wonderlands. You could explore a small river. Or you could paddle out at sea to a tiny deserted beach. We can even show you crocodiles, those fierce looking but very shy creatures, if you have the gumption.

Goa’s seas and backwaters provide an astonishing variety of sights and experiences that you will remember long after you leave. Secluded little beaches, charming beach shacks, traditional fisherfolk, dense mangrove forests, birds, water life, bunds, traditional houses and the strange trappings of modernity intermingle. It’s an irresistible package.

Mugger in the Mangroves
UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL: You cannot get closer to a crocodile than from a kayak (Photo by Rahul Alvares http://rahulalvares.com/)

CROC CHALLENGE KAYAKING
Goa’s crocodiles are legendary. They are originally sweet water muggers that have adapted to living in the saline waters of Goa’s river estuaries. Your chances of seeing one of these ferocious looking reptiles, which go back to the days of the dinosaurs, are quite good. They look ferocious, but are actually very timid creatures.

We go up a tributary of the River Mandovi at low tide and watch these magnificent creatures sunning themselves on the mudflats at the side of the river, and in the mangroves. Be very quiet, because the slightest sound can alarm them and they will simply disappear into the water. They are not known to overturn kayaks and/or attack humans.

There has not been a single case of a crocodile attack on a human in Goa over the last 30 years or more. Most crocodiles are very shy; they slide into the water and disappear if you take the kayak too close. Muggers mostly feed on fish. So let your fear take a back seat and put your curiosity in high gear. You cannot get closer to crocodiles in the wild than from a kayak.
